Initially, Baba was known in Poona and Ahmednagar Districts, but Nanasaheb Chandorkar, by his personal talks and by Dasganu, by his splendid Kirtans, spread the fame of Baba in the Konkan (Bombay Presidency). In fact, it was Dasganu - May God bless him-who, by his beautiful and inimitable Kirtans, made Baba available to so many people there. The audience, who come to hear the Kirtans have different tastes. Some like the erudition of the Haridas; some his gestures, some his singing, some his wit and humour, some his preliminary dissertation on Vedanta, and some others, his main stories and so on; but among them, there are very few, who by hearing the Kirtan get faith and devotion or love for God or saints. The effect of hearing Dasganu's kirtan on the minds of audience was however electric

Dasganu was once performing his Kirtan and singing the glory of Sai Baba, in the Koupineshwar temple in Thana. One Mr. Cholkar, a poor man serving as a candidate in the Civil Courts in Thana, was amongst the audience. He heard Dasganu's Kirtan most attentively and was much moved. He there and then mentally bowed and vowed to Baba saying - "Baba, I am a poor man, unable to support my family. If by your grace, I pass the departmental examination, and get a permanent post, I shall go to Shirdi, fall at Your Feet and distribute sugar-candy in Your name." As good luck would have it, Mr.Cholkar did pass te examination and did get the permanent post and now it remained for him to fulfil his vow, the sooner the better. Mr. Cholkar was a poor man with a large family to support; and he could not afford to pay for the expenses of a Shirdi trip. As is well said, one can easily cross over Nahne ghat in Thana District or even the Sahyadri Range; but it is very difficult for a poor man to cross Umbareghat, i.e., the threshold of his house. As Mr. Cholkar was anxious to fulfill his vow as early as possible, he resolved to economize, cut down his expenses, and save money. He determined not to use sugar in his diet; and began to take his tea without it. After he was able to save some money in this way, he came to Shirdi, took Baba's darshan, fell at His Feet, offered a coconut, distributed it with a clean conscience along with sugar-candy as per his vow and said to Baba that he was much pleased with His darshan and that his desires were fulfilled that day. Mr. Cholkar was in the Masjid with his host Bapusaheb Jog. When the host and the guest both got up and were about to leave the Masjid, Baba spoke to Jog as follows:- "Give him (your guest) cups of tea, fully saturated with Sugar." Hearing these significant words, Mr. Cholkar was much moved, he was wonderstruck, his eyes were bedewed with tears, and he fell at Baba's Feet again. Mr. Jog was also curious about this direction, regarding the tea-cups to be given to his guest. Baba wanted by His words to create faith and devotion in Cholkar's mind. He hinted as it were, that He got the sugar-candy as per his vow and that He knew full well his secret determination not to use sugar in his diet. Baba meant to say, "If you spread your palms with devotion before Me, I am immediately with you, day and night. Though, I am here bodily, still I know what you do; beyond the saven seas. Go wherever you will, over the wide world, I am with you. My abode is in your heart and I am within you. Always worship Me, Who is seated in your heart, as well as, in the hearts of all beings, Blessed and fortunate, indeed, is he who knows Me thus."

बाबा की कीर्ति पूना और अहमदनगर जिलों में फैल चुकी थी, परन्तु श्री नानासाहेब चाँदोरकर के व्यक्तिगत वार्ताँलाप तथा दासगणू के मधुर कीर्तन द्घारा बाबा की कीर्ति कोकण (बम्बई प्रांत) में भी फैल गई । इसका श्रेय केवल श्री दासगणू को ही है । भगवान् उन्हें सदैव सुखी रखे । उन्होंने अपने सुन्दर प्राकृतिक कीर्तन से बाबा को घर-घर पहुँचा दिया । श्रोताओं की रुचु प्रायः भिन्न-भिन्न प्रकार की होती है । किसी को हरिदासों की विदृता, किसी को भाव, किसी को गायन, तो किसी को चुटकुले तथा किसी को वेदान्त-विवेचन और किसी को उनकी मुख्य कथा रुचिकर प्रतीत होती है । परन्तु ऐसे बिरले ही है, जिनके हृदय में संत-कथा या कीर्तन सुनकर श्रद्घा और प्रेम उमड़ता हो । श्री दासगणू का कीर्तन श्रोताओं के हृदय पर स्थायी प्रभाव डालता था

ब्रहमा के दो स्वरुप है – निर्गुण और सगुण । निर्गुण नराकार है और सगुण साकार है । यघरु वे एक ही ब्रहमा के दो रुप है, फर भी किसी को निर्गुण और किसी को सगुण उपासना में दिलचस्पी होती है, जैसा कि गीता के अध्याय 12 में वर्णन किया गया है । सगुण उपासना सरल और श्रेष्ठ है । मनुष्य स्वंय आकार (शरीर, इन्द्रय आदि) में है, इसीलिये उसे ईश्वर की साकार उपासना स्वभावताः ही सरल हैं । जब तक कुछ काल सगुण ब्रहमा की उपासना न की जाये, तब तक प्रेम और भक्ति में वृद्घि ही नहीं होती । सगुणोपासना में जैसे-जैसे हमारी प्रगति होती जाती है, हम निर्गुण ब्रहमा की ओर अग्रसर होते जाते हैं । इसलिये सगुण उपासना से ही श्री गणेश करना अति उत्तम है । मूर्ति, वेदी, अग्नि, प्रकाश, सूर्य, जल और ब्राहमण आदि सप्त उपासना की वस्तुएँ होते हुए भी, सदगुरु ही इन सभी में श्रेष्ठ हैं ।

श्री साई का स्वरुप आँखों के सम्मुख लाओ, जो वैराग्य की प्रत्यक्ष मूर्ति और अनन्य शरणागत भक्तों के आश्रयदाता है । उनके शब्दों में विश्वास लाना ही आसन और उनके पूजन का संकल्प करना ही समस्त इच्छाओं का त्याग हैं ।

कोई-कोई श्रीसाईबाबा की गणना भगवदभक्त अथवा एक महाभागवत (महान् भक्त) में करते थे या करते है । परन्तु हम लोगों के लिये तो वे ईश्वरावतार है । वे अत्यन्त क्षमाशील, शान्त, सरल और सन्तुष्ट थे, जिनकी कोई उपमा ही नहीं दी जा सकती । यघरि वे शरीरधारी थे, पर यथार्थ में निर्गुण, निराकार,अनन्त और नित्यमुक्त थे । गंगा नदी समुद्र की ओर जाती हुई मार्ग में ग्रीष्म से व्यथित अनेकों प्रगणियों को शीतलता पहुँचा कर आनन्दित करती, फसलों और वृक्षों को जीवन-दान देती और जिस प्रकार प्राणियों की क्षुधा शान्त करती है, उसी प्रकार श्री साई सन्त-जीवन व्यतीत करते हुए भी दूसरों को सान्त्वना और सुख पहुँचाते है । भगवान् श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा है संत ही मेरी आत्मा है । वे मेरी जीवित प्रतिमा और मेरे ही विशुद्घ रुप है । मैं सवयं वही हूँ । यह अवर्णनीय शक्तियाँ या ईश्वर की शक्ति, जो कि सत्, चित्त् और आनन्द हैं । शिरडी में साई रुप में अवर्तीण हुई थी । श्रुति (तैतिरीय उपनिषद्) में ब्रहमा को आनन्द कहा गया है । अभी तक यह विषय केवल पुस्तकों में पढ़ते और सुनते थे, परन्तु भक्तगण ने शिरडी में इस प्रकार का प्रत्यक्ष आनन्द पा लिया है । बाबा सब के आश्रयदाता थे, उन्हें किसी की सहायता की आवश्यकता न थी । उनके बैठने के लिये भक्तगण एक मुलायम आसन और एक बड़ा तकिया लगा देते थे । बाबा भक्तों के भावों का आदर करते और उनकी इच्छानुसार पूजनादि करने देने में किसी प्रकार की आपत्ति न करते थे । कोई उनके सामने चँवर डुलाते, कोई वाघ बजाते और कोई पादप्रक्षालन करते थे । कोई इत्र और चन्दन लगाते, कोई सुपारी, पान और अन्य वस्तुएँ भेंट करते और कोई नैवेघ ही अर्पित करते थे । यघपि ऐसा जान पड़ता था कि उनका निवासस्थान शिरडी में है, परन्तु वे तो सर्वव्यापक थे । इसका भक्तों ने नित्य प्रति अनुभव किया । ऐसे सर्वव्यापक गुरुदेव के चरणों में मेरा बार-बार नमस्कार हैं ।

Scorpion-Sting

Narayan Motiram Jani of Nasik was a devotee of Baba. He was serving under another devotee of Baba, by name Ramachandra Vaman Modak. Once he went to Shirdi with his mother and saw Baba. Then Baba Himself told her that he (her son) should serve no more, but start independent business. Some days after, this prophecy turned true. Narayan Jani left service and started a boarding house 'Anandashram' which thrived well. Once a friend of this Narayanrao was stung by a scorpion and the pain caused by it, was servere and unbearable. Udi is most efficacious in such cases; it is to be applied on the seat of pain, and so Narayanrao searched for it, but found none. Then he stood before Baba's picture and invoked Baba's aid, chanted Baba's name and taking out a pinch of the ashes of the joss-stick burning in front of Baba's picture and thinking it to be Baba's Udi, applied it on the seat of pain and the sting. As soon as he took out his fingers, the pain vanished and both the person were moved and felt delighted.
