The Difference Between Trust and Faith

  • Often, we get confused on the difference between Trust and Faith…

Allow me to clear this difference with an illustration.

Once at a circus, there was this rope walker who showed us his amazing skills by walking on a rope from one end to the other. When he reached the other end, there was a huge sound of applause by the audience. The rope walker simply smiled. This time, he decided to blindfold himself and walk on the rope. Everyone was amazed upon him reaching the other end without falling off and gave him a bigger round of applause. He then asked the audience if they trusted him and the reply came YES!, we do! since they now trusted him on his magnificent skills, he now decided to carry a chair on his shoulders being blindfolded and walk the rope. Upon him reaching the end of the rope, there was a standing ovation and a louder round of applause for him. The audience was once again amazed by the rope walker.

He now said, you all trust me! He then asked “Who is willing to sit on that chair above my shoulders?”…there was pure silence!! He said the person who is willing to take that chance is the one who has complete Faith in me.

“Faith is being sure of what we hope for & certain of what we do not see.”

    Stay Blessed!!

  • Very nice example to differentiate faith and trust.

And often our god asks for faith from us.

Does that mean trust is limited and faith is unlimited? Seems so to me.

  • Let me add a little bit to the story. :)

"A rope-walker was showing his tricks to people and people were amazed to see his tricks. The rope-walker was highly skilled and supremely confident of his art and all his performances were flawless.

Once after doing one round of of his trick, he asked the onlookers if someone wanted to give him company during the performance. People were scared. The ropewalker told that he would carry the person on his back and there was nothing to be afraid of. Though people had witnessed his ability, it was not easy for them to trust him with their lives. No one came forward. He made several pleas, yet no one could muster enough courage.

After some time, a small child came running and jumped on the back of the ropewalker. The ropewalker took that boy on his back from one end of the rope to another and everybody clapped. The child came down. People surrounded the boy and started asking him if he was afraid anytime during the performance.

The boy replied - "I was never afraid because the rope-walker is my father".   :)

Do you see something more than obvious fact in that sentence? :)

In most profound sense, God is like our father and we need to trust him in difficult times, in tough times and in testing times. However, even though we witness several events whereby God shows his skills, his ability to guide people sail across difficulties; we fail to gather enough courage to trust him completely during our crisis. :)  Amazing isn't it?
