Die Geschichte von den Padukas unter dem Niem-Baum
Ein Devotee des Akkalkot Maharaj namens Bhai Krishnaji Alibagkar betete ein Forto seines Gurus an. Er dachte einmal daran, nach Akkalkot im Distrikt Sholapur zu reisen, um die Samdalen (paduka) des Maharaj zu schauen und mit aller Inbrunst anzubeten. Doch bevor er abreiste, hatte er im Traum eine Vision. Akkalkot Maharaj erschien ihm und sagte: "Jetzt ist Shirdu meine Aufenthaltsort. Gehe dorthin und bete mich dort an." So änderte Bhai seinen Plan und reiste nach Shirdi, betete Baba an und blieb sechs Monate dort und war glücklich.
Zur Erinnerung an diese Version ind die darauffolgenden Geschehnisse ließ er Padukas anfertigen und errichtete an einem günstigen Tag des Jahres 1912 unter Einhaltung der erforderlichen Zeremonien und Formalitäten einen Schrein für sie unter dem Niem-Baum. Diese Zeremonien wurden von Dada Kelkar und Upasani geleitet. Ein Brahmane namens Dixit wurde mit der täglichen Andacht betraut und der Devotee Sagun mit den Formalitäten.

Die vollständige Version dieser Geschichte
Herr B.V. Deo, ein pensionierter Finanzbeamter aus Thana und ein großer Devotee von sai Baba, stellte bei Sagun Meru Nai und Govind Kamlakar Dixit Nachforschungen in dieser Sache an und veräffentlichte eine vollständige Version von den Padukas im "Sai Leele Magazin"Band 11, Nr. 1, Seite 25. Sie lautet wie folgt:
Im Jahre 1912 kam Doktor Ramarao Kothare aus Bombay zu Babas Darshan nach Shirdi. Sein Apotheker und dessen Freund Bhai Krishnaji Alibagkar begleiteten ihn. Der Apotheker und Bhaiu schlossen Freundschaft mitSagun Meru Nai und G.K. Dixit. Während sie diskutierten, kam ihnen die Idee, dass es doch eine Gedenksätte von Babas erstem Erscheinen inShirdi und Seinem Platz unter dem Niem-Baum geben sollte. Sie wollten Babas Padukas dort einsetzen und begannen damit, diese aus rohen Steinen anzufertigen. Dann schlaug Bhais Freund, der Apotheker, vor, dass diese Angelegenheit seinem Meister, Doktor Ramarao Kothate, vorgetragen werden solle, der für diesen Zweck feine Padukas anfertigen lassen würde. Der Vorschlag gefiel allen und so wurde Doktor Kothare informiert. Dieser machte einen Entwurf von den Padukas und ging zu Upasani Maharaj in Khandobas Tempel und zeigte ihm den Entwurf. Upasani machte noch einige Verbesserungen, zeichnete Lotos blüten, Blumen, Muschelhorn. Diskus, Mensch usw. ein und schlug vor, dass der folgende Vers über die Größe dies Niem-Baums und über babas Yogakräfte als Inschrift erscheinen sollte:
....

"Ich verneige mich vor Saainath, dem Herrn,
der durch Sein ständiges Sitzen am Fuße des Niem-Baumes -
der, obwohl er bitter und unangenehm ist,
dennoch Nektar hervorbringt (1) -
diesen noch besser als den Baum der Wunscherfüllung macht."

Upasanis Vorschlag wurde angenommen und ausgeführt. Die Padukas wurden in Bombay angefertigt und durch den Apotheker nach Shirdi gesandt. Baba sagte, dass sie am Vollmondtag des Monats Sravana eingesetzt werden sollten. An jenem Tag, um ewlf Uhr morgens, trug G.K. Dixit sie in einer Prozession auf seinem Kopf von Khandobas Tempel nach Dvarakamayi (Masjid). Baba berührte die Padukas, sagte dabei, dass dies die Füße des Herrn seien und bat die Leute, sie unter dem Niem-Baum aufzustellen.
Am Tage zuvor hatte ein Parsi-Devotee mit Namen Pastha Shet per Geldanweisung 25 Rupien gesandt. Diese Summe stellte Baba für den Paduka-Schrein zur Verfügung. Diegeamten Kosten beliefen sich auf 100 Rupien, von denen 75 durch Spenden gesammelt wurden. In den ersten fünf Jahren hielt G.K. Dixit täglich die Andacht für die Padukas, danach wurde sie von Laxman Kacheshwar Jakhadi ausgeführt. Dr. Kothare schickte das Geländer für die Padukas sowie jeden Monat zwei Rupien für die Beleuchtung. Die Ausgaben von 7,50 Rupien für den Transport des Geländers vom Bahnhof nach Shirdi und die Überdachung wurden von Sagun Meru Naik übernommen. Nun führt Jakhadi (Nana Pujari) die Andacht durch und Sagun Meru Naik bringt die Speiseopfer dar und zündet abends die Lampen an.
Bhai Krishnaji war ursprümnglich ein Devotee von Akkalkot Maharaj. Er war 1912 aif seinem Wege nach Akkalkot zur feierlichen Aufstellung der Padukas nach Shirdi gekommen. Nach Babas Darshan wollte er weiterreisen und bat Baba hierfür um Erlaubnis. Baba sagte: "Oh, was gibt es dort in Akkalkot? Warum gehst du dahin? Der regierende Maharaj des dortigen Ortrs ist hier. Ich bin's." Als Bhai das hörte, reiste er nicht nach Akkalkot. Nach der Aufstellung der Padukas kam er immer wieder nach Shirdi.
Herr B.V. Deo schloss daraus, dass Hemadpant diese Einzelheiten nicht wusste. Denn hätte er sie gewusst, würde er es nicht versäumt haben, diese in seiner Satcharita zu erwähnen.

The Story of Padukas (foot-prints) under the Neem Tree

A devotee of Akkalkot Maharaj by name Bhai Krishnaji Alibagkar worshipped the photo of Akkalkot Maharaj. He once thought of going to Akkalkot (Sholapur District), taking the darshana of the Padukas (foot-prints) of the Maharaj and offering his sincere worship there; but before he could go there, he got a vision in his dream. Akkalkot Maharaj appeared in the vision and said to him - "Now Shirdi is my resting place, go there and offer your Worship." So Bhai changed his plan and came to Shirdi, worshipped Baba, stayed there for six months and was happy. As a reminiscence of this vision etc., he prepared the Padukas and installed them on an auspicious day of Shravan, Shaka 1834 (1912 A.D.) under the Neem tree with due ceremonies and formalities, conducted by Dada Kelkar and Upasani. One Dixit Brahmin was appointed for worship, and the management was entrusted to devotee Sagun.

Complete Version of this Story

Mr. B.V. Deo, Retired Mamalatdar of Thana, and a great devotee of Sai Baba, made enquired about this matter with Sagun Meru Naik and Govind Kamlakar Dixit and has published a full version of the Padukas in Sai Leela Vol. 11, No. 1, page 25. It runs as follows:

In 1834 Shaka (1912 A.D.) one Doctor Ramarao Kothare of Bombay came to Shirdi for Baba’s darshana. His compounder; and his friend, Bhai Krishnaji Alibagkar, accompanied him. The compounder and Bhai became intimate with Sagun Meru Naik and G.K. Dixit. While discussing things, these persons thought that there must be some memorial of the fact of Sai Baba’s first coming to Shirdi and sitting under the holy Neem tree. They thought of installing Baba’s Padukas there and were going to make them of some rough stones. Then Bhai’s friend, the compounder, suggested that if this matter be made known to his master, Dr. Ramarao Kothare, who would prepare nice Padukas for this purpose. All liked the proposal and Dr. Kothare was informed of it. He came to Shirdi and drew a plan of the Padukas. He went to Upasani Maharaj in Khandoba’s temple, and showed him his plan. The latter made many improvements, drew lotuses, flowers, conch, disc, man etc., and suggested that the following SHLOKA (verse) regarding Neem tree’s great ness and Baba’s Yogi powers be inscribed. The verse was as follows:

"Sada Nimbarvrikshasya mooladhiwasat,
Sudhasravinam tiktamapi-apriyam tam,
Tarum Kalpavrikshadhikam sadhayantam
Namameeshwaram Sadgurum Sai Natham"

Upasani’s suggestions were accepted and carried out. The Padukas were made in Bombay and sent to Shirdi with the compounder. Baba said that they should be installed on the Pournima (15th) of Shravan. On that day at 11 a.m., G.K. Dixit brought them on his head from Khandoba’s temple to the Dwarkamai (Masjid) in procession. Baba touched the Padukas, saying that these are the feet of the Lord and asked the people to instal them, under foot of the Neem tree.

A day before, one Parsi devotee of Bombay named Pastha Shet sent Rs.25/- by money order. Baba gave this sum for the installation of the Padhukas. The total expense of installation came up to Rs.100/- out of which Rs.75/- were collected by subscriptions. For the first 5 years, G.K. Dixit worshipped the Padukas daily and then this was done by Laxman Kacheshwar Jakhadi. In the first five years, Dr. Kothare sent Rs. 2 per month for lighting and he also sent the railing round the Padukas. The expense of bringing the railing from the station to Shirdi (Rs. 7-8-0) (presently Rs.7.50p) and roofing was paid by Sagun Meru Naik. Now, Jakhadi (Nana Pujari) does the worship and Sagun Meru Naik offers the naivaidya and lights the evening lamps.

Bhai Krishnaji was orginally a devotee of Akkalkot Maharaj. He had come to Shirdi at the installation of the Padukas, in Shaka 1834 on his way to Akkalkot. He wanted to go to Akkalkot after taking the darshana of Baba. He asked Baba’s permission for this. Baba said - "Oh, what is there in Akkalkot? Why do you go there? The incumbent Maharaj of that place is here, Myself." Hearing this Bhai did not go to Akkalkot. He came to Shirdi off and on, after the installation of the Padukas.

Mr. B.V. Deo concluded that Hemadpant did not know these details. Had be known them, he would not have failed to depict them in his Sat-charita.
