Dr. Pandis Anbetung
Dr. Pandit, Tatyasaheb Noolkars Freund, kam einmal nach Shirdi, um Babas Darshan zu erhalten. Nachdem er Baba ehrfürchtig begrüßt hatte, saß er für einige Zeit in der Masjid. Baba bat ihn, zu Dadabhat Kelkar zu gehen; er tat es und wurde herzlich empfangen. Dann verließ Dadabhat das Haus, um zur Andacht zu gehen und Dr. Pandit begleitete ihn. Dadabhat betete vor Baba. Bis dahin traute sich niemand, SAndelholzpaste auf Babas Stirn aufzutragen. Nur Mhalsapathi pflegte sie auf Seinen Hals aufzutragen. Doch dieser schlichte und fromme Dr. Pandit ergriff Dadabhats Tablett mit den Puja-Utensilien, nahm die Sandelholzpaste und zeichnete damit eine tripundra, d. h. drei waagrechte Linien auf Babas Stirn. Zur Überraschung aller verhielt Baba sich still. Er äußerte nicht ein einziges Wort. Dadabhat fragte Baba daraufhin am Abend: "Wie kommt es, dass Du Dr. Pandit erlaubt hast, Sandelholzpaste auf Deine Stirn aufzutragen, obwohl Du es anderen untersagst?" Baba erwiderte, dass Dr. Pandit glaube, Er und sein Guru, Raghunath Maharaj aus Dhopeshwar, bekannt als Kaka Puranik, seien ein und derselbe und so trug er, wie bei seinem Guru, die Paste auf Seine Stirn auf. Deshalb habe Er es nicht ablehnen können. Als man sich erkundigte, erzählte Dr. Pandit seinem Freund Dadabhat, dass er Baba als seinen Guru Kaka Puranik ansah und Ihn als denselben erkannte. Deshalb zeichnete er die drei waagrechten Linien auf Babas Stirn, so wie er es bei seinem Guru zu tun pflegte.
Obwohl Baba Seinen Devotees erlaubte, Ihn so anzubeten wie es ihnen gefiel, verhielt Er sich manchmal recht sonderbar. Einmal warf Er das Puja-Tablett fort und war die Wut in Person. Wer konnte sich Ihm dann nähern? Ein anderes Mal schimpfte Er die Devotees aus und wieder ein anderes Mal sah Er so weich aus wie Wachs, wie eine Statue des Friedens und der Vergebung. Obwohl Er manchmal vor Zorn zu zottern schien und mit rot unterlaufenen Augen hin und her schaute, war Er doch innerlich ein Strom von Zuneigung und mütterlicher Liebe. Sofort ref Er nach Seinen Devotees und sagte, Er sei sich gar nicht bewusst, jemals auf Seine Devotees ärgerlich gewesen zu sein. Selbst wenn Mütter ihre Kinder träten oder das Meer in die Flüsse zurückströmte, würde Er niemals das Wohlergehen Seiner Devotees vernachlässigen und dass Er, der Sklave Seiner Devotees, ihnen stets beistehen würde; wann immer sie Ihn riefen, würde Er darauf reagieren und außerdem sehne Er sich immer nach ihrer Liebe.

Chapter 11

Dr. Pandit's Worship

One Dr. Pandit, a friend of Tatyasaheb Noolkar, once came to Shirdi for Baba's darshana. After saluting Baba, he stayed in the Masjid for some time. Baba asked him to go to Dadabhat Kelkar. He went to Dadabhat, by whom he was well received. Then Dababhat left his house for Puja and Dr. Pandit accompanied him. Dadabhat worshipped Baba. Nobody until then dared to apply sandal paste to Baba's forehead. Only Mhalsapati used to apply it to His throat. But this simple-hearted devout, Dr. Pandit, took Dabadhat's dish containing Puja-materials and taking sandal-paste out of it, drew a Tripundra, i.e. there horizontal lines on Baba's forehead. To the surprise of all, Baba kept silent without uttering a single word. Then Dababhat that evening asked Baba, "How is it, that though You object to the sandal-paste being applied by others to Your forehead, but You allowed Dr. Pandit to do so now?" Baba replied that Dr. Pandit believed Him to be the same as his Guru, Raghunath Maharaja of Dhopeshwar, known as Kaka Puranik, and he applied the paste to His forehead, as he was doing to his Guru. Hence He could not object. On enquiry, Dr. Pandit told Dadabhat that he took Baba as his Guru Kaka Puranik, and hence he marked the Tripundra on Baba's forehead, as he did on his Guru's head.

Though Baba allowed the devotees to worship Him as they pleased, still sometimes, He acted in a strange way. Sometimes, He threw away the Puja-dish and was wrath Incarnate, then who could approach Him? Sometimes, He scolded the devotees, at times, He looked softer than wax, a statue of peace and forgiveness. Though He seemed to shake with anger and His red eyes rolled round and round, still, He was internally a stream of affection and motherly love. Immediately, He called out His devotees and said, that He ever angry with His devotees; that if mothers kicked their children and if the sea turned back the rivers, He would neglect the devotees' welfare: that He, the slave of His devotees, always stood by them, and responded to them, whenever they called upon Him, and that He always longed for their love.
