  • BAYAJABAI -THE PERSONIFICATION OF LOVE

Sri Sai Baba was the human shape assumed by God. He was an example of how the power of God, which is infinite, can fit into the human casing made of the five elements and show divine power through the body.

Of those devotees who served Baba when he was alive, over ninety-five per cent saw this divine power in him and became his devotees. As Sri Madhav Adkar sang in his arati, "Jayaa manee jaisaa bhaava, tayaa taisaa anubhava! Daavisee dayaaghanaa aisee tuzee hee maava!" (As is one's intent, such shall be our experience. As such, bestow thy grace upon each according to their conception of thee. Such is thy divine sport, oh compassionate one.)

Baba's devotees saw Baba as a reflection of their own feelings for him. The remaining five per cent became his devotees not because of Baba's power, but because they loved him. They tied Baba to them with the silken fetters of love. It is on these, who loved Baba unconditionally, that Baba rained his grace so copiously. Looking at Baba through their loving eyes, Baba's divine shape appears to us a glorious rainbow of love and affection. Of all those devotees who danced happily, fully soaked in the gentle rain of Baba's love, the foremost was Sri Tatya Kote Patil. The love and devotion shown by his parents Sri Ganapati Kote and Smt. Bayajabai for Baba was the main reason behind the immense good fortune of Sri Tatya's attachment to Baba.
    TO BE .....CONTD.

  • OM SAI RAM

It was in Shirdi that Sri Sai Baba revealed himself to the world to save humankind. He accompanied Chandbhai Patil's marriage party to Shirdi and stayed on there. When Baba first came to Shirdi, he appeared to the locals as a mere mad fakir and a beggar. In those days, when he kept his divine powers hidden, only three or four villagers were attracted to him. They themselves could not say what attracted them to Baba. Mhalsapati, Kasiram Shimpi, Appa Jogle and Ganapati Kote Patil were the four devotees who served Sri Sai Baba with the utmost love and devotion at that time.

Of these four, Baba was very close and intimate with Ganapati Kote Patil. Baba looked upon Bayajabai, Ganapati Kote's wife, as his own sister and used to call her as such. Sri Sai Sarananand writes in his book about the first time Baba met Ganapati Kote Patil and Bayajabai as follows.

"Perhaps the first person who introduced himself to Baba was Mahalsapati." After he talked to Baba, Mahalsapati felt that he was a saint and believed in him. From then on he would meet Baba without fail every day. He later introduced Baba to his friends, Kashiram Shimpi and Appa Jogle. These three would meet Baba every day and arrange for Baba's needs to be met.

Ganapati Kote Patil heard about Baba from these three and went with his wife, Bayajabai, to meet Baba. Baba rose from his seat and welcomed them graciously, saying to Bayajibai, "Oh lady, you are really my sister!"

  • BAYAJABAI – PERSONIFICATION OF LOVE

Bayajabai was enthralled by Baba. She was devoted to him and vowed that she would not eat without first giving food to Baba. In those days, Baba would not stay in one place, he would be roaming about, sometimes in the village and sometimes in the fields outside the village and staying there. As Bayajabai had vowed not to eat unless she fed Baba first, she would search high and low for him until she found him. She would wait at home for Baba till noon every day in case he would come to beg for food. If he had not appeared by then, she would put the food in a basket and placing it on her head, start searching for him in the fields and thickets outside the village. When she found him she would make him sit down and would feed him with the utmost love and affection. After some time, as if to save Bayajabai the bother, Baba started staying at the mosque and having his food there.

Sri Tatya Kote Patil writes about the itinerant, homeless Baba of those early days at Shirdi thus.
“When Baba first came to Shirdi, he wore a green kufni (a long shirt-like garment extending down to the mid-calf) and a green headdress. After four months he changed the colour of his headdress to white. When Baba first came to Shirdi, he did not have a fixed abode. After a few months of wandering about, he stayed at the mosque for ten months. Later, he started living under the neem tree. Again after a while he moved to the mosque. He stayed there for two or three years and then shifted to the grove of trees between the Lendi and the Seera rivulets. Someone or other among the devotees would arrange for his food there. After staying for two-and-a-half years at the grove of trees, Baba finally moved back to the mosque, and stayed there till he entered samadhi.”

  • BAYAJABAI – PERSONIFICATION OF LOVE

Baba would not go to all the houses in Shirdi to beg for his food. He would beg only at the houses of Patil Bua Waman Gondkar, Nandram Marwadi, Ganapati Kote Patil and Sakharam Shelke. He would hang a cloth around his left shoulder and carrying a tin in his right hand, go first to the house of Patil Bua Gondkar. He would stand in front of the house and shout with his carillon like voice, “Aango Radha, bhakar” (Radha, bring the roti).

He would then go and stand in front of Nandram Marwadi’s house and shout, “Nand de khore, bhakar lao” (Oh son of Nand, get the roti). After this came the turn of Ganapati Kote Patil (Bayajabai). He would stand in front of the house and shout “Abaade abaad, Bayajamami roti Lao” (Aunty Bayaja, get the roti).

Baba would go these houses to beg food even two or three times a day. Two or three years after Baba came to Shirdi, famine was rampant and the people were suffering. During the famine, Baba went only to the houses of the richer amongst these devotees, such as Nandram Marwadi and Ganapati Kote Patil. When Baba went to beg for food, he would stand in the forecourt beyond the doorway and take the offered food but never step into the house.

Bayajabai used to invite Baba to come in and rest a while whenever he came begging, but Baba would always politely decline. The most he would do was to sit in the shade in the forecourt of their house. Bayajabai would plead with Baba to sit inside the house and eat there in front of her but Baba would do as he pleased. Rarely would he sit in their forecourt and have his food there. Bayajabai would be ecstatic with happiness on those occasions when Baba ate in front of her. She would plead, “Eat a little more, try this curry…” and make him eat a little extra. “Have something to drink,” she would beg Baba.

  • BAYAJIBAI – THE PERSONIFICATION OF LOVE

Normally Baba ate bhakri (unleavened bread of coarsely ground millet) with a little curry. Sometimes he would ask for milk, curd, buttermilk, pickles, onion or pappadam (very thin chapati-like preparation of black gram, fried in oil or roasted over coals) and eat them with relish. Bayajabai would always keep these foods ready in case he asked for them.

Bayajabai served Baba thus with great love and unswerving devotion for a long time. We are unfortunate that no written record is available to us of what Baba taught Bayajabai or what divine experiences he gave her. One incident is, however, available to us about Bayajabai from the reminiscences of Tatya Patil.

Radhakrishna Ayi was first staying at Pandaripur and later came to Shirdi. Once she decided to go on a pilgrimage to Pandaripur from Shirdi by foot. Bala Shimpi and Madhav Fasle also started along with her. They wanted to take part in the festival which would be held at Pandaripur on the eleventh (ekadasi) day of the month of Ashaad. My mother, a few others, and I too decided to go to Pandaripur to take part in the festival. As Radhakrishna Ayi and her group had already left, we decided to go by cart as far as Ahmednagar and catch up with them, after which we could all proceed further by foot. My mother, my brother-in-law, Lakshmibai Shinde and a few other ladies all got ready for the trip.

    Dear Deepa, Sai Ram !

Welcome to this divine site - the SAI Mandir. Several posts of great souls are available here and teach us a lot and improve our standards in all respects.

In my view, unless we are lucky, we can not even reach this sort of sites. As Baba said, this - our joining in this site is also a part of HIS leela.

Though, we are  from Hyderabad, my Hub is born in Rajahmundry and I was born in Nidadavole. See what a coincedence that Baba has arranged our meeting in this Mandir. His Leelas are unpredictable and unimaginable.

May Baba bless all of us with more love and devotion.

  • Dear Kavitha jee
                             SAI RAM.

I have a question with me. Basically i am fond of books. I often surf and iam very intersted to read books of various yogis and satguru's. I usually read Parama Poojya Sri Ekkirala Bhadwaja's Books. In that context i have read his "SaiLeelamrutham" also. I already read "Satcharitra" by Ammula Sambasiva Rao translation of Hemadpanth's book.

But the things u are writing as a espisodes are not seen any where. They are very good and heart touching. Its very nice to hear about the reminiscences of Tatya Patil as well as Mrs.Sapatnekar.
Really you are the blessed child of shri sai.

i think they were not so clear in satcharitra. If u suggest me where did u get those so that i can go through.

Pardon me if anything was wrong.

And kavitha jee pls do a favor to me.
pls tell me the important places to visit when i goto shirdi. becos its tomorrow we all are leaving to shirdi.

  • BAYAJABAI – PERSONIFICATION OF LOVE

    OM SRI SAI RAM

My mother hurried in and said, "Baba, have you sent for me? The sun has set and the dusk is deepening. We are all ready to start." Baba placidly said, "Mother, go home. Do not start today. Do not even start tomorrow. Start the day after tomorrow. Do not ask why. Do not consult anyone in this matter. Here, take this udi and go." My mother did not hesitate a second or even take time to think. She said, "Alright Baba, we will go the day after as you say." We unloaded the carts and sent them off. The friends and relatives who had come to see us off left for their homes. Later, Madhavrao saw the astrological calendar and charts and said that the day was not an auspicious one for travel.

On the morning of the third day, we again got ready to travel. Baba cheerfully gave udi to each of us and came as far as the highway to see us off. We reached Puthamba as planned and after bathing and having a light repast got into the train and reached Bewoor by eight a.m. We met Radhakrishna Ayi's group by nine a.m. That day we reached Narsingpur by lunchtime and had the darshan of Sri Narsing Maharaj. Starting again from there, we reached Pandaripur by the evening of the next day. Cholera struck Pandaripur by the eleventh day of the waxing moon and by the next day was raging throughout the town. Some of us wanted to leave immediately for Shirdi but I was adamant that we should stay till the day of the full moon.

My mother was also scared. She met the mamalatdar, Sri Nana Saheb Chandorkar, who was an ardent devotee of Baba, and asked him to convince me to return to Shirdi. Nana Saheb sent for Bala Shimpi and me and advised us to return immediately to Shirdi. Baba knew that cholera would ravage Pandaripur, but seeing our enthusiasm for the trip could not forbid us to go to Pandaripur."

  • OM SRI SAI RAM !

    Dear Dipika, Sai Ram!

It is very nice to hear that Baba has invited you. Have a nice darshan and as many aartis as possible. Please include in your list the samadhis of Abdul Baba and other saints. As you know from Sai Leelamritham, pl visit Lakshmibaiji's , Marthandji's (Bhakt Mhalsapathiji's son)places.

Please pray on behalf of all of us.

From Sai Leelamritham, you can get a clear idea of all the places that are to be visited. You can go to Sakkori, Singanapoor - Temple of Saniswaran and offer poojas - I heard, only gents would be allowed inside the temple. If you are going by a private conveyance, Nasik, Tryambak( on the hill, you can visit and perform pooja at River Godavari's orgin spot), Grihsneshwar (Dwadasha Jyotirlingam) can also be visited.

You can add a picnic to your piligrimage, on the way you can visit Aurangabad - BibiMaqbara (built by Aurangjeb - a replica of Tajmahal in pink stones) and Ellora caves.
