  • TATYA’S REMINISCENCES OF SRI SAI BABA

Once Tatya came hurriedly to the mosque to seek Baba's permission to go by horse cart to the weekly market at Kopergaon where he had some urgent work. “Baba, I am going to Kopergaon,” he blurted out hurriedly. Baba said, “Why are you in such a hurry? Slow down a little. Let the market be. Do not leave Shirdi today or go anywhere.”
Tatya insisted that he had very urgent work at the market in Kopergaon and that he would go. Seeing his unyielding insistence, Baba relented and said, “Go if you wish but do take Shama along.” Tatya, feeling that he did not require the company of Shama for the short trip to Kopergaon, disregarded Baba's words, got into the horse-cart and whipped the horses to a gallop. The cart passed Shirdi and reached the vicinity of Savul Vihir village. Of the pair of horses, one was new and unused to being yoked to the cart. It therefore galloped faster than its companion and stumbled and fell.
Tatya fell out of the cart but did not suffer any major injuries due to the grace of Baba. In the same way, he once again disregarded Baba's advice and had an accident while going to Kolhar village. In this manner Baba had directly, as well as indirectly, looked after both the worldly and the spiritual welfare of his Tatya.

  • DID BABA SACRIFICE HIS LIFE TO SAVE TATYA’S?

Sri Ramachandra Kote Patil fell seriously ill in 1916. All types of medication were tried but were found to be futile. Everyone thought that his early death was inevitable. He too was resigned to his death and waited with dread for the day. One night Baba presented him with his divine vision and said, “Do not fear. I have stopped your death. You will get well soon. I am only worried about Tatya. He will die in 1918 on Vijayadasami day, but do not reveal this to anyone, especially Tatya. If you tell him this, it will only serve to terrorise him before his death.”
Amazingly Ramachandra Patil started to recover his health from the very next day and attained his former good health in a few days. He was an intimate friend of Tatya and knew that Baba’s words were unalterable and had to come true. He realised that Tatya had only two more years left in this world and was engulfed in sorrow. He could not keep this burning anguish within himself for long and shared the secret divulged by Baba with his friend Bala Shimpi alone.

  • DID BABA SACRIFICE HIS LIFE TO SAVE TATYA’S?

As Ramachandra Patil and Bala Shimpi feared, Tatya fell seriously ill as the Vijayadasami of 1918 approached. Baba too fell ill around the same time. Tatya’s condition worsened day-by-day and turned critical one or two days before Vijayadasami. He could not even come to the mosque for the darshan of Sri Sai Baba. One day Baba sent word to him to come to the mosque and have his meal there, but as Tatya could not summon enough strength to even rise from his bed, some devotees helped him to go to the mosque where Baba fed him with semolina pudding with his own hands despite his ill health.
Tatya could only swallow a couple of mouthfuls with great difficulty. Baba told him, “Tatya, I have arranged for two swings (carriages) for us initially. But I have changed my mind. I alone will go on now presently. Now you may go home.” Tatya understood the import of Baba’s words and started sobbing. He said, “Baba, why do you not send me first?” Baba replied, “I am a fakir, there is no one to cry for me when I go away. But all your people will grieve if you go.”
Tatya heard the tone of finality in Baba’s words and his sorrow intensified and he started weeping piteously. He said, “Baba, if I go, it is only my relatives who will grieve. But if you go, you will make many people of this world orphans. If you live on many people will attain salvation by your mere darshan. What of me? My life is a burden to me and to my relatives too.”
Baba would not brook any further talk in this vein from Tatya. He scolded him lovingly, “Alright, no more talk from you. Go home.” He put udi on Tatya’s forehead and sent him home, watching him with a heavy heart until he was out of sight.   Tatya says, “I used to fast on the holy days of ekadasi, the Mondays of the month of Sravan, and on Shivaratri. However, Baba's opinion was that there was no spiritual or material benefit whatsoever in fasting. He would make me eat something or other on those holy days and make me break my vow of fasting. One Shivratri day I said, ‘Baba please let me observe fast at least on this day. Please do not make me eat anything today."

  • DID BABA SACRIFICE HIS LIFE TO SAVE TATYA’S?

Baba was relentless, “Eat” he pressed. “What Shivratri are you talking about?” Dada Kelkar who was near also told me to obey Baba and not argue with him. I did not object any more and never fasted from that day onwards. In the same manner, we have earlier seen how Baba discouraged Tatya from going on a pilgrimage to Jujuri village one Mahashivratri day.
Having been very close to him, Tatya had the opportunity of seeing Baba in some very rare spiritual moods. Tatya recalls one such instance as follows: “Sometimes Baba was in a deep spiritual trance," said Tatya. “During these rare occasions Baba would hold a tambura in his hands and dance in ecstasy, forgetting himself and his body. The graceful, rhythmic movements of his feet, hands and eyes would enrapture all those who witnessed his dance. He would sing with an angelic voice and his song would charm all listeners.
Dancing thus, Baba used to gesticulate as if he were playing the flute and stand with his feet crossed one in front of the other. For those fortunate devotees who happened to see him in such a mood, it would appear as though they were seeing Lord Krishna at Brindhavan, rather than Baba. All those who saw him in that enthralled state were themselves enraptured by an unknown, other worldly feeling and were transported with delight.

  • DID BABA SACRIFICE HIS LIFE TO SAVE TATYA’S?

On the Deepavali day of 1910, Baba, sitting opposite the dhuni and adjusting the firewood, suddenly put his hand into the fire. His hand was badly burnt. When the devotees enquired as to why he had done this Baba replied that he did so in order to save a child at some distant place who was about to fall into a furnace from its mother’s lap. Tatya was in tears seeing the burnt hand of Baba. “Why do you cry?" Baba remonstrated with Tatya gently. “We should not flinch even if this body is kept in a red-hot furnace of two thousand dung cakes. That is the hallmark of a true jnani. (a self-realized person; a sage; one who has attained realization by the path of knowledge)
However, Tatya did not always taste the nectar of Baba’s love but occasionally tasted his anger as well. In 1914, Kakasaheb Dixit was enlarging the forecourt of the mosque as he felt that it was very congested for the huge press of devotees. One night when Baba was sleeping in Chavadi, all the devotees got together and after great labour dug holes in front of the mosque and placed pillars in them. Baba returned to the mosque in the morning, and on seeing this flew into a rage. In that anger he seized hold of Tatya's throat with one hand and with the other started easily pulling out the pillars which even two or three devotees had struggled to carry. He then pulled Tatya’s turban off and setting fire to it flung it into one of the holes dug for the pillars. He then took out a rupee coin and flung that into the hole too. Baba's eyes were like balls of fire in the throes of that anger.
None dared approach that personification of rage and all stood a safe distance away, too scared to even draw near. Baba did not loosen his grip on Tatya’s neck. The strong Tatya – who normally could carry Baba on his shoulders and run about with him – could not escape Baba's hold no matter how hard he tried. Everyone was worried as to what may happen to Tatya. Bhagoji Shinde gathered up his courage and tried to draw near Baba to extricate Tatya from his grip but Baba shoved him away and threw stones at him. After a while Baba calmed down and sent a devotee to the market for a new turban with golden thread for Tatya. Baba wound the turban around Tatya's head himself as a mark of his approbation.

  • DID BABA SACRIFICE HIS LIFE TO SAVE TATYA’S?

The day of Vijayadasami dawned and Baba entered mahasamadhi. Tatya’s health astonishingly started improving a few hours after Baba’s mahasamadhi and fully recovered in a couple of days.
The people believed that Baba had sacrificed his own life to save Tatya’s. Hemadpant brings this out in the 42nd chapter of Sri Sai Satcharitra. “It seemed that they both (Baba and Tatya) exchanged a life for a life and a death for a death. The people believed that Baba had sacrificed his life for the sake of Tatya. Baba alone knows whether this is true or not. In this manner Baba had stated Tatya’s name but indicated his own mahasamadhi.” It was not surprising that the people believed thus seeing that Baba had loved Tatya more than his own life itself.
But this is just a blind belief on their part and in fact has no foundation. This is because Baba has clearly stated that he had first arranged for two swings (carriages), one for himself and the other for Tatya. But he had changed his mind and sent one swing back and that only he will be going away. He did not say that he had got only one swing ready for Tatya and that he would be going in that instead of Tatya. Tatya also only requested Baba to send him first but not to send him instead of Baba.

  • DID BABA SACRIFICE HIS LIFE TO SAVE TATYA’S?

Further; Sri Sai Baba is an incarnation of god whose birth, growth and death is tied with the karma and salvation of many devotees. Baba had saved many devotees from death and indeed had even brought back alive many who were dead too. To save Tatya from death was an easy task for him, it was not necessary for him to sacrifice his own life to save Tatya’s.
As Hemadpant stated, he may have, in his natural cryptic style, indicated his death in advance and said Tatya’s name instead of his own. The feeling of the people that he had sacrificed his life to save Tatya mirrors their belief that he had indeed loved Tatya more than his own life.  Tatya was childless for a long time after his marriage, but felt that he could have children if he married a second time. But as he remained childless for a long time with his second wife, he married yet again.
His third wife, too, did not bear him any children. He was disappointed, and thought that he was not fated to have children so made preparations to adopt the son of his friend, Ramachandra Patil. He arranged for the adoption ceremony and taking the adoption papers went to Sri Sai Baba for his blessings. When Baba saw the papers he said, "Why do you need to adopt anyone? You will get children yourself."

  • DID BABA SACRIFICE HIS LIFE TO SAVE TATYA’S?

Tatya had an unshakeable belief in Baba's words and immediately stopped the adoption ceremony. But he did not get any children for a long time even after this. Finally he went to Baba and said "My God! You said that I would get children and hence I had stopped the adoption ceremony. But a long time has passed since then and I am still childless. What do you want me to do now?" Baba replied, "Tatya, if you get children you will lose your wealth. Choose whether you want riches or children." Tatya, who was yearning day and night for children, replied "Let the riches go if they go. I want children."
Baba smiled and said, "Alright then, you want children rather than wealth. You will get as many children as the litter of a sow. Go now!" Later, when Tatya was 55 years old, all his wives started bearing children and he ultimately produced a large family. Today his family, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren, number over a hundred. But as Baba had stated, his prosperity vanished and Tatya had to face many financial problems. However, by the grace of Sri Sai Baba, he passed away without a care in 1945, without being in debt to anyone. (These details were given to Saipatham personally by Sri Tatya's son by his second wife, Sri Uttamrao Kote Patil)
Sri Tatya Kote Patil's samadhi is located between the entrance gate to Lendi garden and the power-house of Sri Sai Baba Sansthan. Tatya was widely regarded as the light in the eyes of Sri Sai Baba. Perhaps his samadhi being adjacent to the power-house giving light to the whole of Shirdi is the divine will of Sri Sai Baba and not entirely a coincidence.

Why I am asking this is my kid is 2.6 yrs old. She has "JanamaShani" and she has serious suffering in her health from the time of her birth. some astrolgers predicted that this will continue till she is 5 yrs old ie till 2009.
But by baba's grace when she entered into 3rd year her health was improved better.
Iam doing everything they say and performing many poojs for her. On the other Part i truely belive in baba and i have full faith in him.
so i dont like to visit astrologers. becos when baba is with me then y should i run here and there? But according to some conditions it happened to visit them. It's not like i dont believe in astrology or i dont like astrologers. But i think who ever believes in baba, dont have a need to consult others.

Am I correct. I am having this doubt from past 1 month and trying to find out. but today your post gave me the answer. I think baba gave the advice for me through You.

Pls suggest me in this issue. What can i do better.

    Deepa

    Dear Deepa, Sai Ram !

Though I am not competent to give any firm answer on this, I wish to share my views on this.

Why does one goes to an astrologer ?  I get 3 reasons –
    a.   Weaker mind – temporary problems, problems which have not come to an end, our basic nature
    b.   Fear  - that something  may happen and anxiety to prevent if you know what exactly may happen and do some pariharams – poojas, gems etc.
    c.   Curiosity - whether I will become a doctor, when construct a house, going abroad, when is my marriage, children their future

From Baba’s teachings, we can really understand that HE is against this foreseers / future tellers etc. and has warned many of his devotees who practiced such sciences. He felt everything we should get only from the GOD  Allah  Our Sai. HE has many a time said “you all are my children and you should get everything from me”.  You have read Sai Leelamritham by Masterji which gives a more detailed approach on this.

But, we do consult astrologers at times for which I feel one of the above should be the reasons. Our prayers must give us more and more strength that we should overcome all such reasons and   develop total belief in Baba.

I will tell you my one experience here. Once I had a serious problem  that all other things were in vain and I decided to consult an astrologer. I went to the astrologer; after the consultation etc., he gave me a photo of Sai Baba saying that he went to a  Baba temple and he was given many photos of Baba. Through this Baba has confirmed to me once again,

    a.   I am with you always.
    b.   No need of consulting any astrologer

I did not consult any Astrologers later. But i continued to perform pariharams etc. as and when required such as performing pooja for GURU on the Guru transit day and for SANI on a sani transit day.

However, it is Baba who should give us everything including the restrian from astrologers - This is purely my feeling.

  • I think , I have some information about your doubt. As per an eminent scholar, scientist and Vice Chancellor of Manipal University, Mr. B.M.HEGDE's view; the astrology has got scientific reasons. He has given an examle. If an operation takes place on fullmoon day the bleeding will be more comparing to other days. It means our body, brain responds to the changes in the nature, as the ocean looks different in fullmoon days. Our body  also very much similar to the rest of the creation. Obviously, it reflects on our thoughts, subsequently it dictates our doings as well as our health conditions.

I hope, you will get your doubt clear, if you read all his writings and lectures.

BABA has got hold on creation. He can make turn it in our favour.

After all, he is the creator.

  • Om Sri Sai Ram

During 80's, One Woman who did not have any issues, used to participate in the Satsang at Acharya Ekkirala Bharadwaja Swamy in Vidya Nagar, Nellore District, A.P. I am giving below the gist of her experience which was available in Swamyji's "SRI SAI LEELAMRITHAM" - old edition.

A Baba devotee - who did not have any children was eagre to become a mother and could not for long. She lost the hope and continued to pray Baba and attend the Satsang at Vidyanagar. She neared the period of Menopause. Once Baba appeared in her dream and asked her what she wanted. She said "Swamy ! You do know everything. Anyway, please bless me with mother hood at least in the next Janma (birth). Baba smiled and said" If you have to wait till next birth, why am I here". and there ended the dream.

After few months, her periods stopped. She consulted a doctor and he said there is a tumour in the uterus and she should be operated upon to remove the uterus it self. She came back and everybody insisted that she should go for the surgery otherwise, it may be dangerous. But, she refused and decided to wait for 10 months and then only decide. All her relatives felt she was risking her life itself. But she didnot bother. IMPOSSIBLE BECAME POSSIBLE. In 10th month, she gave birth to a boy baby and her health was normal. OM SRI SAI RAM!

Baba's closest devotee, infact, the luckiest of all the devotees - Shri Tatya Kote Patil had to wait till he was 55 despite he had three wives. Baba's acts are known to him only for,
HE KNOWS WHAT IS BEST AND FOR WHOM.

May Baba fill the laps of all my sisters with HEALTHY Babies soon.

  • Kavitha ji....

You are such blessed soul ...as i was reading your posts something struck me .....i was talking to Sai the night before yesterday and seeing his answers in his book ....as usual i asked him when we will get children and he gave me a number...the answer that he gave me was very touching...he said "i have taken care of my children very well and have given you when the time comes ...i have done so much to you dont i know when to give you what you are asking "i was taken back by this answer and asked apologies to Sai telling him taht after all i am human and bound to be a ajnani....

Sai takes care of all his devottees ...he is such a giving father that sometimes i feel bad that i am asking him to much..off lately i have been experiencing his miracles very much...

i feel his presence around me and i also feel that he is in the house...his face is so divine and so graceful that you would never want to take your eye out of it ......my heart feels contented and very satisfied when i see him and talk to him.....

May Sai continue to be with each one of us and shower his blessings

  • OM SRI SAI RAM

Sri P.V.Satyanarayana Sastri records, in an article, the strange transformation of a famous atheist of Andhra into an ardent devotee of Baba. Late Sri Gopichand, a famous writer and a prominent atheist, was working as an employee of the Government at Kurnool. His wife was in the hospital, suffering from labour pains for three days and her condition was critical. On the third day, as he walked past the Sai Mandir towards hospital, he thought; "Baba, if you could bless my wife with a safe delivery, I shall believe that your power is divine."

At the hospital his wife delivered a male child. She told him that the old fakir in a vision, sat on her cot and said, "Don't fear, I shall save you." He then put a little vibhuti on her forehead, put a little of it in water and gave her to drink. She at once delivered. And the time of her vision coincided precisely with the time of his silent prayer to Baba! Gopichand named his son as Sai Baba, causing quite a stir among his atheist friends.
